“The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.”

—Martin Luther King, Jr. at 17-years-old writing for Morehouse’s student newspaper

Many may believe that Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. had several encounters. That would be a fair conclusion since they were contemporaries and worked fervently toward similar goals. To the contrary, they only met once and only for a few moments.

The Meeting by Jeff Stetson, first performed in 1987, presents a fictional meeting between these two iconic leaders. Set in a Harlem hotel on the uppermost floor, the audience is allowed into a world exploring the humanity of two public figures who in reality were denied their humanity and assassinated for their work, vision and convictions.

Sinclair Theatre will present The Meeting on Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at Blair Hall Theatre in Building 2 on Dayton Campus. Admission is free and open to all. The play was successfully staged in 2021.
